Audio: Jungle Sounds of the Night

This is a recording of the night sounds made on the evening of August 24th, in Nobnob territory near Madang, Papua New Guinea. We have no idea what animals or bugs make most of these sounds yet. The distinctive, high call starting at about the twelfth second is made by a brown bird about six inches long with a white belly. We don’t know any more than that yet.

You may need to turn up the volume to hear the sounds well.

I’m hoping to get a recording of the sounds in the morning sometime. The thing is that I’m not usually thinking that clearly in the morning. 🙂

That’s a great recording, something that those of us who have been in PNG a long time forget to appreciate and record. I’m guessing that the majority of the sounds in this recording are various types of frogs. I wish I had a frog recording of the village to play on our sound machine at night.
