Are You Losing Feathers?

At a recent [Bible translation] workshop on the book of James, the discussion centered on translating the key word “faith.” One team shared that their term for faith is literally “losing feathers.” They explained that there is a species of bird in their area that, upon hatching its eggs, loses its feathers. During this molting phase, the mother bird is no longer able to fly away from the nest and look for food for herself or her hungry hatchlings. She has to remain in the nest where she and her babies are completely dependent upon the male bird to bring them food. They can do nothing to save themselves but are dependent upon the “gifts” of the male bird and must accept his gifts to live. On this scenario is based the word for “faith” in this language.
